Several mining sectors, from phosphate to uranium, are reviewed and their current impacts and challenges are discussed. The mining legacy and environmental remediation, the present mining and challenges, and the future mining and society are discussed in relationship with environmental health and sustainable development.

In this article underground mining refers to underground hard-rock mining; thus, underground soft-rock mining, such as coal, is excluded.

Underground mining, however, removes minerals such as in hard-rock mining by extracting under the surface and removing the ore (Aryee et al., 2003; Balasubramanian, 2017; Gibria, 2014; Northey et al., 2013).

When the ore is exhausted, miners move on leaving behind finely-ground tailings and waste rock above ground, and tunnels underground. Such mining activities expose part of the earth's crust to water, oxygen, and bacteria.

The mining article ("Digging for victory" (June 29) could also have looked at the environmental impact of mine tailings and tailings-dam failures. I encourage readers to consider the following: Most metals are extracted from hard rock, which is crush

The only other evidence of the Switzerland Trail's existence is its old roadbed, long-closed mines, and the presence of towns that the railroad helped solidify. Though the tracks and engines were scrapped and sold off, the Switzerland Trail's legacy lives on.

اقرأ المزيدHard rock underground mining has been wedded to the drill-blast method of breaking rock. Current practice and technology have focused on greater efficiencies in the blasting and handling of ore, on the basis that the lower costs that come with larger scale operations compensate for the waste dilution associated with the bulk methods.
